July 20: Happy International Chess Day!

20th July is celebrated as World Chess Day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924.

Chess, a game which results in better brain function, improved memory and cognitive abilities, strategic thinking and attention improvement. Chess the game which according to Voltaire, ‘reflects most honour on human wit’ originated in ancient India.

A number of similarities exist between modern chess and Indian game called Chaturanga, which dates back to the 5th Century AD.

Constituted as a non-governmental institution, FIDE was recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a Global Sporting Organisation in 1999. In the year 2022, FIDE announced a new tradition of Chess Olympiad Torch Relay. The first torch relay commenced from New Delhi. This will be a regular feature in the coming Olympiads.This stamp was released on 20th July 2022 on the occasion of 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad which was organised at Mahabalipuram (Chennai) from 28th July to 10th August 2022.
