Top 10 Countries by GDP and Top 10 Countries by Market Cap

I came across an interesting video about Top 10 Countries by GDP over a period of more than 100 years and another video on Top 10 Largest Companies by Market Cap.

I am posting it here because I found it to be very interesting, informative and thought-provoking.

GDP as a concept came in early 1930s and there are many limitations of that approach – the most important being that it is a major of activity and not quality of output or impact. A Government should be measured on the basis of effectiveness, and not efficiency. GDP focuses on efficiency. However, it is still popular and practically everybody majors their progress and the size of the economy in terms of GDP.

Market Cap is similar metric. It measures how market participants “price” a company, not necessarily “value” value it. Also, not every company is publicly listed. So there are many limitations in using Market Cap as a metric; however, it is more robust than the GDP.

Another observation. The Market Cap of the largest company was in Billion Dollars few decades ago. Now it is over 3 Trillion USD i.e. a growth of 100x-150x! That is a good insight because it shows the overall value created over decades, and also what is not clearly understood is that much of that “value” has come about by consumption and destruction of the planet.
