Today I was listening to “Nostalgic 90’s Music” on a music App and one of the songs was my favorite song from the 1991 movie “Patthar Ke Phool” starring Salman Khan and Raveena Tandon (her debut movie). The song was: Kabhi Tu Chhalia Lagta Hai sung by S.P. Balasubramanyam and Lata Mangeshkar.
I was reminded of similar song based on movie titles from the 1981 movie “Ek Duje Ke Liye” starring Kamala Hassan and Rati Agnihotri. The song was “Mere Jeevan Sathi Pyar Kiye Jaa” sung by S.P. Bala subramanyam (again) and Anuradha Paudwal.
Both the songs were sung by S.P. Balasubramnyam – interesting to have featured in both such attempts, also so many of the movie titles had Lata Mangeshkar as a lead singer!
I am not a musically trained person, but I am good at analysis – so I didn’t stop at “so many movie titles”. I decided to go one step beyond and actually list down all movie titles in the above two songs and also find out which ones had Lata Mangeshkar as a singer.
And the results are amazing (but not unexpected!). It quantitatively shows the massive contribution by Lata Mangeshkar in Hindi film music over 5-6 decades. (as I said, I am not musically trained. So I dare not comment on the qualitative aspects. But quantitative evidence is good enough).
By now you should have easily guessed that (1) I have lots of time for such unproductive “research” or (2) I am very passionate about Hindi movies and songs. Well, it is actually (1) AND (2).
So here is the list and my analysis:
1981 movie “Ek Duje Ke Liye”: Song “Mere Jeevan Sathi Pyar Kiye Ja”
- Mere Jeevan Sathi (1972)

So 50 out of 63 movie titles in this song had at least one song sung by Lata Mangeshkar
Now let’s move to the next song…

- Paagal Premi (1977)
- Bandhan (1969) – No song by Lata. Only Asha.
- Nadiya Ke Paar (1948) à This 1948 movie had songs sung by Lata. There was another movie in 1982 by the same name which did not have any song by Lata.
- Pyar Ki Manzil (1950) à This 1950 movie had songs sung by Lata. There was another movie in 1981 by the same name which did not have any song by Lata.
- Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)
- Do Dil (1965)
- Shabnam (1964) à This 1964 movie had songs sung by Lata. There was another movie in 1949 which did not have any song by Lata. The movie had a song by Lalita Phadke, wife of legendary Marathi composer Sudhir Phadke.
- Chingari (1989) – No song by Lata. à The film was made in 1971 but released in 1989! Just in time to lend a word for this movie song in 1991
- Naagin (1954 and 1976)
- Jogan (1950) – No song by Lata.
- Aayee Milan Ki Bela (1964)

- Humse Hai Zamana (1983)
- Leader (1964)
- Loafer (1973)
- Hero (1983)
- Joker [Mera Naam Joker (1970)]
So 31 out of 45 movie titles in this song had at least one song sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
Total: 81/108 i.e. 75% of movies had Lata Mangeshkar’s voice! Actually few movie titles are common across both songs, so mere addition is wrong, but that won’t change the % and conclusion by much.
Here is interesting trivia:
- The Patthar Ke Phool song had reference to Ek Duje Ke Liye (which featured Mere Jeevan Sathi song), and also to Maine Pyar Kiya (Salman Khan’s own movie).
- Both songs had 1 reference each to a movie of Sachin (Pilgaonkar) and interestingly both the movies did not have any song by Lata.
- There were several movies where Lata did not have any song, but either Asha Bhosle or Usha Mangeshkar had. So if you add them to the broader list of “movies with Mangeshkar sisters as one of the singers” I think the % would go up to 90-95%
The 2008 movie “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” had a similar song – “Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte“. However it was not exactly based on Movie Titles, but was a mashup of Hindi movie titles and Song phrases.
This reminds me of yet another theme – Antakshari songs in Hindi movies. But may be some other time…now back to work 🙂
You won’t believe what a baggage you have taken from my shoulders… M a big fan of old songs and myself like to do all these kind of researches about songs… Thanks anyways for the efforts you put into this… And be sure the good work always gets praised.. It might not be the most immediate reaction but will get its due over time… Thats what your effort is..
