The Great Indian Kitchen – A Must Watch

I wrote about How I Spent Year 2020 and mentioned my new found interest in Mallyalam cinema. This year, I continue that journey and watched the first Mallyalam movie of 2021. The Great Indian Kitchen!

The movie is just amazing! Slow burn that exposes the patriarchal Indian society and the disgusting entitlements of Indian men in a family. I struggled to find it online and somehow got it after a lot of hustle. The movie is slow, grows on you in a creepy way. Nothing much happens. Your anger slowly piles up, just like in the movie. The movie is filled with so many minute details that it needs a thorough and attentive watch.

Here is an excellent review of this movie by Anupama Chopra. This film should be a strong contender for India’s entry to Oscars.
