New Comedy Stand-up by Abhishek Upmanyu

Abhishek Upmanyu is one of the better stand-up comedians in India. There are few others such as Bassi, Punit Pania, and Kunal Kamra who consistently produce some good stuff. There are many others who have a lot of one off acts which work, but they are not consistent always.

I have noticed one more trend in Youtube followers/views. If you see, the number of followers of a lot of content creators/celebrities, across all fields, are several times the number of views of their videos. For example, Beerbiceps – the Sanghi Youtuber – has 6.25 million subscribers, but the typical views he gets are less than 0.5 million. Ankur Warikoo has 3.18 million subscribers but his videos usually get only 40-60 thousand views. Rachana Ranade has 4.57 million viewers but her videos get only 80-100 thousand views.

In my opinion, the true success is when views on your videos is close to your subscriber count, or ideally more. If less, it should be at least 60-70% of the subscriber count. This is because, many random viewers would watch the video without subscribing to a channel. So a sizeable portion would come from such viewers. However, if your followers are not genuine, or committed, they might follow for some reason and would never watch regularly.

Hence, in my opinion, the real test of committed followers is the conversion of subscribers into viewers.

Abhishek Upmanyu does well on that count. Comedian Bassi and Marathi comedy channel BhaDiPa also do well on that metric. Their views on videos (in general) are significant proportion of their subscribers. Sometimes they are many more. For example, Bassi’s latest act has 36 million views while his followers are 4.65 million.

Honest confession: I myself score poorly on this parameter. I have many more subscribers (close to 300) but get very less views per day (40-75 per day).

Anyways, do keep tracking this metric and let me know if you agree with my analysis.

For now enjoy the latest full special by Abhishek Upmanyu.
