The latest episode of Everything is Everything podcast is really interesting! It’s titled “How to think about Cricket (and Life).
Interesting insights on statistics and sports analytics; however, one thing which I think was missed out was that the game of cricket has become pro-batters (I prefer batsmen, the old moniker, but trying to change with the times). The rules have changed and it’s not an even competition between bat and ball. One of the reasons could be that spectators don’t like low scoring games dominated by bowlers. They feel bang for the buck if one side scores 400 in an ODI and the other side chases it successfully or comes close to it. Who wants “All Out 90 led by a fierce bowling attack and then Not Out 91 in 20 overs” kind of match?
Recently there has been a change to use two balls in one innings. Which means batters get a new shiny ball almost throughout the inning. The reverse swing with old ball in 49th over is almost a dead art.
If you consider that aspect, the analysis in this podcast changes a lot. Having said that it’s an interesting conversation, as always!
