Second edition of Global Chess League sponsored by Tech Mahindra has started in Dubai from 3rd October and will go on till 12th October.
You can catch live streaming on Jio Cinema app (Sports section) from 5:30 PM Indian Standard Time. It’s free and doesn’t need Jio mobile number or app subscription.
For the uninitiated, Global Chess League is chess equivalent of Indian Premier League (IPL) of cricket. There are teams owned by corporates. 6 Top players (including Carlsen, Anand, Anish Giri, MVL, Swidler, Nakamura and all young stars from India, all top women) play against each other in a team format.
The interesting part is the time control and points structure. Time control doesn’t have an increment for each move (which is actually bad). So you see a lot of flying pieces and fumbling in the end. It doesn’t look good at such a high level. Hopefully that will change.
The points structure is more creative. 1 point for a draw, 3 points for a win as White and 4 pointe for a win as Black! That makes whole thing quite competitive.

It’s a feast for chess lovers like me! I’m also starting my chess training again (self study at home) from this week and have subscribed to Chess Mate magazine. The last time I had subscribed to it was 1990-1992!
I couldn’t find any suitable coaching which matched my needs and the timing. So for now, I’m going to try self-study using Chess Mate magazine.
