Mark Twain famously said: “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes“
Karl Max allegedly said (allegedly because everything about Karl Marx can be viewed with suspicion ЁЯШЛ): “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce“
What’s happening in my country India is what Karl Marx said. The country is completely rattled and yet most people seem to be ignorant of it and tiny few are actually happy that our stock market is scaling new highs. The PM, who I hate from bottom of my heart, has mastered the art of perpetually fooling enough people to win elections. And he has conquered media and social media.
I just discovered a cartoon by the great cartoonist R K Laxman which depicted a similar story in 2003. Not surprisingly it was the same ruling party in power at that time – the party and ideology I reject. The current dictator has gone a few steps ahead of the benevolent dictator in 2003. And the other things in the cartoon fit precisely well – be it farmers protests, stock market boom or our cricket victory over Australia.
So, enjoy the cartoon and think over it, if possible…the farce we are in today.
