Flowers by Miley Cyrus, Makeba and Taylor Swift Songs

I am an avid music lover. I used to spend huge time on collecting good and rare music, posting it on my music podcast, catering to demands of people who used to follow my podcast and so on. Since the last few years, my interest in music had dipped. I didn’t seek new songs and didn’t keep up-to-date with the current music. Of late, my interest in music has been rekindled! I’m now experiencing growing urge to listen to music again! And I feel good about this change!

My taste in music had been mostly shaped by Indian music – Hindi film songs, Non-film music such as Ghazals, Devotional songs, other regional music (mostly Marathi and South Indian), and Hindustani Classical (vocal and instrumental). I seldom followed the Western music. I knew only the top artists of my generation (Michael Jackson, J Lo, Britney, Shakira etc.) and offbeat songs which suited my taste (country music by Kenny Rogers etc.). I didn’t listen to Elvis, or the Beatles. The main reason was that I couldn’t understand the melody, the lyrics and the overall aesthetics of it (maybe because of heavy influence of the kind of music I was following). I know the typical songs of various artists which are huge hits but don’t know their other body of work. The same way I also didn’t know much about the new generation of the pop artists – Rihanna, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez et al. K-Pop is, of course, far far away!

However, I do want to explore that music and develop the taste. I don’t know where to start, and I don’t have someone who can guide me. So I’ve been randomly looking for things that I like and enjoy.

One such person I got to know in last 1-2 years was Taylor Swift. For some reasons, I liked her personality – the way she carries herself, the way she writes songs and creates music. So I followed some of her work and liked a few! Especially the meaning of some of her songs.

Since English is not my native language, it’s very very difficult for me to make sense of gibberish. That’s not the case with Hindi or other Indian language songs. But with English, I have to like the lyrics as well. That’s probably why I liked Kenny Rogers songs. Of course there are exception to this rule – songs such as Makeba or Waka Waka and few others. Taylor Swift’s songs stood out on this parameter of quality of lyrics. Her songs are emotional, sentimental, quirky and imaginative. Recently I also stumbled across Flowers by Miley Cyrus and liked the message, the emotion a lot!

Hence I thought of writing this post to share few such songs.
