I watched Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” a couple of months back and wanted to write this blog since then. However, it got delayed due to multiple reasons. So finally decided to write it today, as a quick/short review.
Laapataa Ladies is about the misadventures of two young brides who get lost from the same train. From mistaken identities to laugh-out-aloud escapades, the ensuing chaos guarantees laughter galore and heartwarming moments.
It’s a really small and simple movie which is very grounded and earnest in story-telling. I had liked Kiran Rao’s “Dhobi Ghaat” a lot. It was off-beat and a bit esoteric. But I enjoy those kind of films!
This one establishes Kiran Rao as a great cinema maker and proves that Dhobi Ghaat was not a fluke. It also tells us the role Kiran Rao must have played in other Aamir Khan productions – from Lagaan to Dangal.
Casting of this film is perfect! Each characters leaves a mark and each one is well developed. Barring Ravi Kishan, all the actors are relatively new or unknown; and that actually works for the film! Ravi Kishan has played his role with great elan! He shines in these kind of roles. (I don’t like his politics, but he is a talented actor with some potential). The main 3 characters – Deepak Kumar, Phool Kumari and Jaya – have done excellent work and so has Manu Maai (Marathi actor Chhaya Kadam who is having a great year with other successes – you might remember her from Andhadhun where she played the flower seller and wife of rickshaw driver who are part of the kidnapping/extortion). Other characters are also well written and executed.
I liked music/background music/songs of the film. They take the story forward.
Dialogues are amazing – crisp, witty and sharp!
It’s a kind of small film which you can watches multiple times and wouldn’t get bored of. You’ll notice multiple nuances in the film every time you watch it again – small things about our society, police, marriage system, how a girl child is treated, hierarchy and class system, the general goodness/kindness among people etc.
Glad to see that it has a high rating of 8.5/10 on IMDb. Do watch it if you like cinema!
