2nd June was death anniversary of the legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor (passed away in 1988). There were many posts on Twitter to remember him, but one of those specially caught my attention.
It is well known that Raj Kapoor and Nargis were the most popular and loved on-screen couple in their era. It was also rumoured that both were deeply in love in personal lives and that chemistry reflected in their on-screen performances too. Raj Kapoor was already married when Nargis came into his life. So they never actually came together and married. However it’s no secret that both were “soulmates”.
Similar love story existed between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, at one point. And that was equally gossiped; however it was not as sustained or probably as real. They did only a few films together whereas Raj Kapoor and Nargis did 17 films together!
Raj Kapoor was the first person in Hindi film industry who really fascinated me. And till date I consider him as the most prolific film personality in Hindi cinema…mainly because the kind of hats he donned and contributed to various aspects of film making. He was not a great actor, maybe not even good…but he was a decent actor, great showman, director, producer, story-teller. Had very good ear for music (he himself played multiple instruments well). He started his own production company at very young age of 22-23. Produced many memorable movies under RK banner. He was full of life, positive and energetic.
On the other hand, Nargis carried a totally contrast image/personality. She was subdued, thoughtful, not necessarily attractive or sensuous but had a pleasing and soothing personality.
That was my perception about the two.
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw exactly those sentiments being echoed on Twitter (and that’s the reason for this post 😋🤗). Here is what one Tweet said about the two.

The picture is just lovely! And the words are precise! They must have been really great soulmates, going by this photo.
It’s often said that some things are better left incomplete. Raj Kapoor-Nargis was probably one such story…
