As a student I didn’t like history as a subject. It was mainly because the history taught in school was not a critical study, but more of propaganda or glorification of a Point of View. History should be unbiased; or history should have multiple points of views, which are backed by facts, evidence and research.
Later in life I slowly understood that history is not only Political history, or related to Kings, Kingdoms, British Empire and Freedom Struggle. In fact every subject has a history. I developed interest in history of scientists, scientific discoveries, inventions, history of mathematicians, literature and so on. In the same thread I got interested in history of businesses, corporates, business personalities and so on.
In India, there is very little focus or emphasis on proper documentation of the business history. Geeta Piramal has done a great job by documenting some of the business personalities and families in India. But largely it’s an ignored domain.
So when I stumbled across the new series by media and publishing platform/portal The Ken, I got very interested. I was an early subscriber of The Ken for 1 year. It was way too expensive, so I discontinued after 1 year. Even before the founders started The Ken, I knew them via Forbes India magazine where they were journalists. I have been one of the first subscribers of Forbes India and continued for 5-6 years.
The Ken has started a series called Intermission which covers one corporate/company at a time and does a deep dive on their history, evolution and many other facets. Each episode is 4-5 hours, so you can imagine the depth. There are two episodes out so far on Youtube and both were pretty engaging. Looking forward to more episodes in this series.
